The Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Judge Damian Lubuva.
The Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Judge Damian Lubuva yesterday urged the nation’s media not to be tainted by any bias and partisan interests.

Speaking to journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Judge Lubuva said the electoral body alone cannot do the job of ensuring a credible election; “but it must be done by a combination of multiple players including the media,” he said.

“I’m aware that you have been doing a very good job in this year’s election so far,” he said commending  the media “...but I am asking for more support particularly at this time when we are so close to the election day,” the official urged.

“Media plays a big role in ensuring that the public make informed choices and promote better citizens participation,” he acknowledged.

Lubuva further enjoined the media to put national interest to the top of their priority list when reporting issues related to the election process.

“Though there might be personal preferences, in peace, everybody wins,” he said.

“We are vigilant, we have digital equipment to detect fraud...there will be no rigging of votes as some politicians claims...we’re determined to be as transparent as possible,” he reassured stakeholders.

Lubuva summed up urging the public to trust the electoral body performs its role.

“We’re going to work as stipulated by the mother law…what people hear in the political podiums are mere politics...results of all posts will be released at the polling stations…we’re doing this to increase transparency in the election process,” he concluded.
